The environmental impact that the coffee industry has led to the annual creation of more than 500,000 tonnes of waste coffee grounds in the UK alone.
Landfill sites, which is where most waste coffee grounds end up, account for 22% of the UK’s methane emissions, as a result of the decomposition of organic material. Methane is a greenhouse gas 28 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
