August’s Book Club book was the Orange Prize for Fiction winner The Tiger’s Wife by Tea Obreht. Having read one of the shortlisted novels a few months ago and enjoyed it, we were keen to see what the winner would be like!
Everyone found the book beautifully written with vivid descriptions, but the novel felt more like a collection of loosely connected short stories which didn’t always feel like they fit together. Some of the tales felt unfinished and unresolved, but the way they were written made up for it for most people. The group felt they would’ve liked to know more about the region and the war that was referenced. Overall everyone felt that they would recommend the book as a fantastic example of writing, but would have liked more of a coherent story.
Our next book will be Vernon God Little by DBC Pierre. We’ll be meeting, as usual on the last Thursday of the month (29th September) at 6pm in the Church St branch. All are welcome, even those that don’t finish the book!
