It was a bit of a love it or hate it reaction to February’s book club choice – Never the Bride by Paul Magrs. Everyone agreed that the book was certainly very readable, but the way the bookwas split into four chapters, which read like short stories, were at times a little frustrating. Aspects like the TV crew for ‘Manifest Yourself’ – a parody TV shows about ghost-hunters were curious, but never really reached their potential in almost episodic nature of the stories. Everyone felt the novel was setting up for something, and weren’t surprised to find out if was the beginning of a series. The sinister Christmas Hotel and its owner proved the most intriguing, and the whole group agreed they would’ve like more exploration into her story. Overall though, everyone felt the novel was a nice casual read, possibly aimed better at teenagers, despite the two semi-retired main characters.
March’s book is The Bell by Iris Murdoch. We’ll be meeting on the last Thursday of the month, 31st March, at 6pm in Church St. As usual, we welcome those that have read the book recently, a while ago or haven’t finished it.
